More information about the siren!

.

In mid-September the station base radio started malfunctioning.  It needed to be replaced to comply with an upcoming January 2013 FCC Narrowband Mandate.  A new radio was installed and a controller/decoder was added and the siren was painted.  The siren will go off for most Fire Calls during the day and should not go off at night except for a tornado warning.

How can you tell the difference between a weather event and a fire call?

For a fire call the siren will go high and low for about a minute.  For a weather event (tornado warning) the siren and all other participating sirens in the county will sound and stay high for 3 minutes then they will stop.

Will the siren go off every time there is a thunder storm?
No, the siren should only go off for a tornado warning.  A warning means Take IMMEDIATE ACTION; a Tornado is occurring or may be imminent. If you are indoors, stay away from windows, doors, and exterior walls. Go immediately to an interior room on the lowest level, ideally a basement. If you are outdoors, in a vehicle, or in a mobile home, leave and seek shelter in a reinforced building. If shelter is not available, lie flat in the nearest ravine or ditch with your hands shielding your head.

A WATCH means that conditions are favorable for severe weather and a warning may be issued.
